1 Node Definition

Node 21240 measures household-level financial position and spending as a contributing input to the 21200 Economic Factors (APN Aggregate Macro-Volatility Index™) composite. It carries a weight of 0.05 within that nine-input composite — the smallest of the 21200 series’ recorded weights — reflecting its role as a secondary signal rather than a primary structural driver of the index.

Household Finance & Spending (21240) does not measure business or institutional credit conditions — that is the domain of Credit Velocity (21270). Nor does it measure migration-driven demand shifts, which are captured separately by Migration Trends (21250). Household Finance & Spending (21240) measures the household sector’s own financial position and spending, as reported through Tier-1 institutional statistical collections.

2 Metric Definition & Composite Construction

Primary metric: Node Composite Z-Score (Z21240)

Composite Construction — Equal-Weighted Three-Series Composite
Current (Q2 2026)−0.4375σ
Composite structureThree certified input series covering household lending, spending and debt-to-income indicators, each contributing approximately one-third (33.3%) of the composite
Z 21240,tProduced directly by APN’s certified composite pipeline from the three input series’ certified values

Metric typology: Continuous multi-series composite (equal-weighted, three inputs), certified under the APN institutional data architecture.

A population standard deviation (σ) is not available at the composite level for this node. Unlike a raw input series, the certified composite Z-score is a pipeline output computed directly from the three input series’ own certified parameters — it is not itself backed by a stored population mean and standard deviation. Where this page’s parameter strip and sidebar would otherwise show σ, that field is a disclosed NIL RETURN rather than an invented figure.

3 Data Sources

The composite draws on three certified input series, equal-weighted, sourced from Tier-1 institutional collections (the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority).

4 Baseline Statistics — What’s Certified So Far

Household Finance & Spending (21240) was first certified through APN’s pipeline-native process on 15 June 2026. Its March quarter 2026 reading was certified three times as its inputs were restated, most recently on 5 September 2026, when the first-home-buyer vs investor lending spread was rebuilt from its ABS source. The June quarter 2026 reading was certified on 1 October 2026, once the June quarter of the high debt-to-income lending share was published. Three reference periods are on record:

The June quarter 2026 reading, −0.4375σ, ranks 17.2 against 30 quarters and sits inside the normal range of −0.6150σ to +0.9411σ. The highest ranked reading was +1.5233σ in the December quarter 2021, and the lowest −0.8560σ in the September quarter 2022. Before March 2019 the high debt-to-income lending input is not yet published; those readings are drawn dashed and are not ranked.

5 Analytical Interpretation

The current certified composite reading of −0.4375σ (Q2 2026) sits below the baseline mean, though within half a standard deviation of it, and is the lowest reading since the June quarter 2023. All three inputs read below their averages: the lending spread −0.11σ, the spending spread −0.13σ and the high-DTI lending ratio −1.07σ. The lending and spending spreads were both above average in the March quarter, and the high-DTI ratio has fallen further.

Position. 17.2, ranked against 30 quarters of the node’s record.

Node 21240 · Inputs
Input Z-Scores, June Quarter 2026

The gold shape is each input's Z-score in the June quarter 2026: first home buyer vs investor lending growth −0.1094σ, discretionary spending gap −0.1333σ and high debt-to-income lending −1.0697σ. The grey dashed ring marks 0σ, each input's baseline average. The three inputs carry equal weight.

The Q1 2026 certification was the first to draw on all three input series simultaneously. The prior Q4 2025 reading of +0.0303σ was built from only two of the three series, so the movement between it and the March quarter reflects both an underlying change in conditions and a change in composite coverage — it is not a strictly like-for-like quarter-on-quarter comparison. The two earlier certifications of the March quarter (−0.0438σ and −0.0460σ) were made before the lending-spread input was rebuilt from its ABS source; its stored history had been inflating that input's baseline dispersion, muting its contribution. The June quarter 2026 reading is the first certified reading to sit clearly away from zero. One quarter does not establish a trend, and a longer certified run is needed before this node can support trend-level commentary.

One of the three input series carries a shorter certified history than the other two, which is disclosed in Section 3 rather than smoothed into the composite silently.

7Other Components

The other eight components of Economic Factors (APN Aggregate Macro-Volatility Index™) (21200).

Node 21210
Interest Rates
Reads the cost of capital from the cash rate, retail lending rates, the two-year forward bond yield and the share of new lending at high debt-to-income multiples.
Node 21220
Inflation
Reads the inflation environment from headline, housing and trimmed-mean consumer prices, house construction producer prices and consumer inflation expectations.
Node 21230
Employment & GDP
Reads the strength of the labour market and of output growth, from Labour Market Tightness (21231) and Growth per Person (21235) at equal weight.
Node 21250
Migration Trends
Reads net overseas migration to Australia.
Node 21260
Construction Costs & Supply Chain
Reads construction cost and supply-chain pressure from the gap between output and input producer prices by state, input price growth, dwelling approvals volume and construction companies entering external administration.
Node 21270
Credit Velocity
Reads the pace of new credit origination from new loan commitments, the share of lending at high debt-to-income or loan-to-value ratios, and lenders' interest spreads and serviceability settings.
Node 21280
Business Insolvency
Reads companies entering external administration or having a controller appointed for the first time, with construction and all other industries as separate components, from ASIC insolvency statistics.
Node 21290
Construction Completion Lag
Reads how long the pool of dwellings under construction is taking to clear, comparing the stock under construction against the rate at which dwellings are completed.
8 Certification Statement
APN Codex Node 21240 — Household Finance & Spending — Certified
  • All three input series are sourced exclusively from Tier-1 institutional collections (the Australian Bureau of Statistics and APRA)
  • The composite is derived directly from certified input-series values, not estimated or manually adjusted
  • The current certified composite Z-score of −0.4375σ (Q2 2026, certified 1 October 2026) is built from full three-series coverage. The March quarter 2026 was certified three times as its inputs were restated, the first two (−0.0438σ, −0.0460σ) before the lending-spread input was rebuilt from its ABS source; the prior Q4 2025 reading of +0.0303σ was a partial composite built from two of the three series — these differences are disclosed, not hidden
  • One input (the high-DTI lending ratio, published only from 2019) carries 28 quarterly observations inside the 2011–2025 baseline window, below the platform's minimum; it is retained with this disclosure
  • No population standard deviation is claimed at the composite level; this is disclosed as NIL RETURN rather than invented
  • No commercial data provider dependency exists within this node
