1What It Measures

One of six Sentinel components. Measures concentration of acute socio-economic vulnerability by locality across five sub-indicators of mixed polarity. Requires at least 3 of 5 sub-indicators valid for a locality to score.

Sub-indicators:

  1. Low-income household share Inverted
  2. Social housing share Inverted
  3. Lone-person household share Inverted
  4. One-parent family share Inverted
  5. SEIFA IRSD Direct
Known methodology limitation, disclosed

The low-income household share sub-indicator uses a flat <$650/week threshold, not equivalised for household size. As a result, a single-person and a five-person household are both tested against the same dollar figure.

24126 Score — 6,765 Localities Over 200 Residents

Scores are ranked across all 13,984 scored localities. Among the localities with more than 200 residents shown here the mean is 42.62.

3Pillar Alignment and Geography

Alignment with the pillar. Across the 6,764 localities with more than 200 residents scored on both, this component and APN Sentinel™ (Safety & Sentiment Index) (24120) have a correlation of 0.63, on a scale where 1 means the two scores move together exactly and 0 means they are unrelated. The two are moderately aligned: a locality that scores high on this component tends to score above average on Sentinel, with many exceptions. This component is one of the pillar’s six inputs, so part of that alignment is built into the pillar itself.

By State and Territory
Average 24126 Score by State and Territory

Each bar is the average score of the jurisdiction’s localities with more than 200 residents, with every locality counted equally regardless of population; the dashed line marks the national mean of 42.62. The Australian Capital Territory averages highest at 47.8 (100 localities) and the Northern Territory lowest at 33.5 (162). Victoria averages 46.2, New South Wales 46.2, Queensland 40.8, Western Australia 39.2, South Australia 37.5 and Tasmania 36.0. Other Territories (4 localities) are not shown.
