Property Crime Risk
Statistics on this page describe the 6,778 scored localities with more than 200 residents. 14,707 localities are scored in all.
One of six Sentinel components. Reads the recorded property crime rate for each locality: offences per 100,000 residents in the council area, police district or reporting unit the locality sits in. The score is an inverted national percentile rank, so a higher score means lower recorded property crime.
Offences counted: burglary or unlawful entry, and theft, including motor vehicle theft. Fraud, receiving stolen goods, arson, property damage and trespass are not counted.
Population: ABS estimated resident population at 30 June 2025.
Source: state and territory police and crime statistics agencies. The reference period is the year to March 2026, except in South Australia (2024–25) and Tasmania (2022–23).
A locality carries the rate of the unit its police service reports. Of the 6,778 localities with more than 200 residents, 5,814 are read at council-area grain (New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania), 800 at police-district grain (Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory) and 162 in the Northern Territory, where four centres are read by council area and the remainder by district. Two New South Wales localities keep a suburb-grain rate. Localities in one unit share its rate, so the score does not distinguish suburbs within a council area or police district.
Publication rule: localities with 200 residents or fewer are scored and are not published in any ranking, list or map, in any state or territory. This page reports national aggregate statistics, not individual locality rankings.
Scores are ranked across all 14,707 scored localities, where they spread evenly from 0 to 100. Among the localities with more than 200 residents shown here the spread is uneven, with a mean of 46.98.
Alignment with the pillar. Across the 6,760 localities with more than 200 residents scored on both, this component and APN Sentinel™ (Safety & Sentiment Index) (24120) have a correlation of 0.69, on a scale where 1 means the two scores move together exactly and 0 means they are unrelated. The two are moderately aligned: a locality that scores high on this component tends to score above average on Sentinel, with many exceptions. This component is one of the pillar’s six inputs, so part of that alignment is built into the pillar itself.
Each bar is the average score of the jurisdiction’s localities with more than 200 residents, with every locality counted equally regardless of population; the dashed line marks the national mean of 46.98. New South Wales averages highest at 69.3 (2,087 localities) and Queensland lowest at 29.3 (1,488). The Australian Capital Territory averages 55.9, South Australia 50.2, Tasmania 49.7, Western Australia 37.7, Victoria 34.4 and the Northern Territory 32.5. Police services in each state and territory record and publish offences differently, and several jurisdictions report at a coarser geography than the locality, so differences between jurisdictions partly reflect recording practice. Tasmania’s reading rests on 2022–23 offences.
The other five components of APN Sentinel™ (Safety & Sentiment Index) (24120).
- Inverted national percentile rank of the recorded property crime rate per 100,000 residents
- ABS estimated resident population at 30 June 2025; one offence basket in every jurisdiction
- Statistics describe localities with more than 200 residents
