1What It Measures

Population Growth measures how fast Australia’s resident population is expanding, quarter by quarter. It is the rate of change in the estimated resident population, not the population level itself.

The node is a component of Demographic Demand Conditions (24730), which in turn sits within the APN Investment Conditions Index™ (24700). It is a national time series, not a geographic one — there is no locality distribution or map at this node.

The rate rather than the level is the conditions signal. Australia’s population rises in almost every quarter, so the level itself is dominated by its own upward trend and carries little information about whether current conditions differ from the past. How fast it is rising does carry that information.

Its sibling component Migration Flows (24732) isolates net overseas migration, which is one of the two things that drive this measure. The relationship between them is set out in the caveats.

Resident population, quarterly growth rateABS, derived100.0%

The input is derived from the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated resident population series as its quarter-on-quarter percentage change. Natural increase is deliberately not carried as a separate input here, because it is already one of the two components of the change this measure captures.

Reading, ranked quartersNormal range (middle 80% of ranked quarters)Current reading

The March quarter 2026 reading, +0.6354σ, ranks 76.3 against 60 quarters and sits inside the normal range of −0.8310σ to +1.1044σ. The highest ranked reading was +2.4189σ in the March quarter 2023, and the lowest −2.9377σ in the September quarter 2020. The input is an original series that peaks in the March quarter each year, which accounts for the alternating pattern.

5Reading the Pattern

Population grew by 0.47 per cent in the March 2026 quarter, above its own fifteen-year average at +0.64 standardised. The March quarter is the seasonal high point for population growth, and against earlier March quarters this is the slowest since 2021: 0.50 per cent in 2025, 0.58 per cent in 2024 and 0.74 per cent in 2023.

The position of 76.3, ranked against 60 quarters, places this quarter in the upper quarter of the node's record. Roughly three in four quarters since 2011 have recorded slower growth than this one, most of them outside the March quarter.

The series contains two features that dominate its history and are worth holding in view when reading any single quarter. Population growth turned negative during the 2020 and 2021 border closures, the only such episode in the record, and then rose to the fastest rates the window contains as borders reopened. The current reading sits well below that reopening peak and above the closure trough.

6Methodology & Disclosed Caveats
  • This node and its sibling share most of their signal. Population change is natural increase plus net overseas migration, so this measure contains the migration flow that Migration Flows (24732) isolates. Across the quarters both cover, the two components move almost identically. An equal-weighted parent therefore counts the migration signal close to twice. Equal weighting across components is the ratified rule throughout the 24700 series, so this overlap is disclosed rather than adjusted for, and the parent branch should be read with it in view.
  • Natural increase is deliberately excluded as a separate input. Mapping it alongside would count the same flow twice within this node, for the same reason set out above.
  • Population estimates are revised. The Australian Bureau of Statistics restates resident population figures as later information arrives, and rebases them following each census. A growth rate derived from those levels inherits both, so historical readings can move.
  • The comparison window. The 2011–2025 window applied here is ratified as part of this node's certification. The input holds sufficient observations and carries no short-history qualification.
  • Comparison basis. The position ranks this quarter against the 60 quarters in which the input is present. That full-coverage basis is the ratified one across the 24700 series; the all-rows basis is retired. Here the two coincide, because this node has a single input present throughout.
  • Signed direction. This component enters the index as it reads: faster population growth is a supportive condition for investment. Its signed and intensity positions therefore coincide at 76.3 — one frame carrying that direction, the other measuring distance from the node's own record without regard to it.
  • Seasonal pattern. The input enters as published by the ABS, without seasonal adjustment. Population growth runs highest in the March quarter each year, so each reading is best compared with the same quarter of earlier years.
7Other Components

The other component of Demographic Demand Conditions (24730). Each is independently certified and enters that branch at equal weight.

8Certification
APN Codex Node 24731 — Certified
  • Certified 10 September 2026, recomputed 17 September 2026 on ABS March quarter 2026 population data, as a component of Demographic Demand Conditions (24730), entering that branch at equal weight with its sibling
  • Intensity reading 76.3 and signed reading 76.3, both ranked against 60 full-coverage quarters
  • Enters the index as it reads: faster population growth is a supportive condition for investment
  • This node overlaps substantially with its sibling, both being driven by net overseas migration; the overlap is disclosed above rather than adjusted for in the weighting
  • The input holds sufficient observations and carries no short-history qualification; its 2011–2025 comparison window is ratified as part of this certification
  • Findings are presented on the basis of data and evidence alone.
