1What It Measures

The APN Financial Climate Sensitivity™ reading tracks Australia’s objective physical climate-hazard exposure — high and low temperature frequency, 5-day rainfall maxima, wind-gust maxima, consecutive dry days, and sea-level-rise frequency — via the Actuaries Institute’s Australian Actuaries Climate Index (AACI), commissioned to Finity Consulting and published quarterly since 1982.

This is a national time-series index, not a geographic one — only the current reading is shown; there is no locality distribution or map for this node.

Single-input by design. AACI’s own standardisation (against its 1981–2010 reference period) is taken as published; APN’s 2011–2025 baseline is computed on top of it, rather than re-deriving the Institute’s own methodology.

4Reading the Pattern

At the 83rd percentile of its own 44-year record, the current reading sits in the elevated range but is easing — it is below both the prior two quarters (Q1 2026 and Q4 2025 both read higher). Autumn 2026 was the 43rd consecutive positive quarterly reading of the index, consistent with the Institute's own published finding.

5Methodology & Disclosed Caveats
  • Meteorological seasons, not calendar quarters. AACI publishes on the Australian meteorological season (Summer Dec–Feb, Autumn Mar–May, Winter Jun–Aug, Spring Sep–Nov) — each season is labelled by name and months and dated to the calendar quarter in which it ends: Summer to the March quarter, Autumn to the June quarter, Winter to the September quarter and Spring to the December quarter. Where this reading is combined with calendar-quarter data, the two are about one month apart.
  • Parent index. This reading is one of the two components of the APN Climate-Risk Asset Devaluation Index™ (24500), alongside the APN Insurance Cost Pressure Index™ (24530). The planned market-pricing component, 24520, has no structured Australian dataset and does not enter.
