1Node Definition

Employment Growth (21232) measures how fast the volume of work in Australia is growing: the change over the year in the number of filled jobs and in the total hours worked. Higher readings mean faster growth. It belongs to the Employment & GDP family (21230) and is read in its own right; it does not compose into 21230.

Jobs and hours are read together because each misses something the other catches: the number of jobs can rise while each worker’s hours fall, and hours can rise with no new jobs. The level of labour market slack is read separately in Labour Market Tightness (21231).

Known limitations

The 2011–2025 baseline includes the 2020 contraction and the 2021 rebound, which widen its standard deviation (filled jobs 1.99 points against 1.42 outside 2020–21; hours 2.75 against 1.87), so readings sit closer to zero than they would against a baseline without those years. Filled jobs are published from September 1994, so growth over the year begins in September 1995.

2Metric Definition

Primary metric: Node Z-Score (Z21232)

Composite Z-Score Construction
Current (Q2 2026)+0.2795σ
JtFilled jobs, growth over the year. June quarter 2026: +2.58% (baseline mean 1.93%, σ 1.99; z +0.3244)
HtHours worked, growth over the year. June quarter 2026: +2.35% (baseline mean 1.70%, σ 2.75; z +0.2346)

Metric typology: equal-weighted mean of two standardised growth rates, each against its own 2011–2025 baseline (60 quarters, sample standard deviation). Levels of jobs and hours rise with the size of the economy, so the node reads their growth.

The June quarter 2026 reading, +0.2795σ, ranks 68.3 against 124 quarters and sits inside the normal range of −0.6797σ to +0.6353σ. The highest ranked reading was +2.9905σ in the June quarter 2021, and the lowest −3.7094σ in the June quarter 2020. Before September 1995 filled jobs growth is not available; those readings are drawn dashed and are not ranked. The lowest and highest readings record the pandemic contraction and rebound.
